Reading Development Programs

Building Critical Reading Skills

Learning to read is one of the most difficult challenges a student faces in their lifetime.

Before a student learns to read, he or she must first and foremost have adequate language skills - including the critical ability to differentiate the sounds that make up words, and thus hear the differences between words.

With this ability mastered, the student is prepared to make the leap from spoken to written words and map the sounds they hear to letters. Because writing is an invented system, students must learn the "invented principles" underlying written language.

Mastering written language not only takes explicit instruction and much practice, but as neuroscience research has shown, it also requires a student's brain be ready to learn.

The Fast ForWord Reading Development programs provide a sequenced learning environment that advances the key cognitive skills required to become a fluent reader. These reading software programs are used following the Fast ForWord language & cognitive enhancement programs, or as separate classroom resource. They are suitable for a wide range of skills and ages from preschool to adult.

Based on research of how the brain learns, Fast ForWord’s reading programs use exclusive patented technology to help students build cognitive skills in the context of essential reading skills.

The Fast ForWord Reading Skills Development Matrix demonstrates the range of key reading skills improved by the Reading Development Programs.

There are 6 Fast ForWord Reading Development Modules:

Fast ForWord Reading Readiness

Fast ForWord Reading Readiness uses exclusive patented technology to help young children develop critical language and cognitive skills to prepare them for early learning. It is designed for early literacy development, helping students who are having trouble moving from the spoken word to the written word.

Fast ForWord Reading Readiness is the initial program in the Fast ForWord Reading series. It develops memory, attention, processing and sequencing, or Learning MAPS, which are critically important prerequisites for successful reading. Read more.

Fast ForWord Reading Level 1

Fast ForWord Reading Level 1 exercises stimulate early reading intervention, with an emphasis on phonemic awareness, early decoding skills, vocabulary knowledge and skills, and motivation for reading.

To accelerate reading progress, Fast ForWord Reading Level 1 software develops brain processing efficiency in four key areas:
  • Builds memory by developing the ability to hold a spoken word, sentence or passage in working memory while recalling letter-sound associations, vocabulary, punctuation rules or semantic information from long-term memory.
  • Improves attention by requiring focused attention to listen while reading along and sustained attention across multiple passage segments and questions.
  • Develops processing of images and sounds quickly enough to discriminate between their differences.
  • Develops sequencing by using positional clues to identify missing letters, to reorder the letters of a 'scrambled' word or by tracking the temporal and causal event sequences in passages to answer comprehension questions.

Fast ForWord Reading Level 2

Fast ForWord Reading Level 2 software consolidates early childhood reading skills, with a focus on applying phonics and decoding strategies, improving word recognition, and understanding the rules for reading comprehension.

To accelerate reading progress, Fast ForWord Reading Level 2 exercises critical brain processing efficiency in four key areas:
  • Builds memory by having students hold an incomplete sentence in working memory while recalling vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation rules from long-term memory.
  • Improves attention by sustaining interest across multiple passage segments and questions.
  • Develops processing by coordinating the auditory and visual processing of two perceptual streams, speech and written text.
  • Develops sequencing by using word order and grammar to identify subtle difference in meaning among phrases, sentences and passages.

Fast ForWord Reading Level 3

Fast ForWord Reading Level 3 software builds on the Fast ForWord Reading Level 2 product by concentrating on reading knowledge and fluency, with a focus on phonology and spelling, morphological properties and complexity, syntactic complexity, vocabulary and comprehension.

To accelerate reading progress, Fast ForWord Reading Level 3 software develops critical brain processing efficiency in four key areas:
  • Builds memory by working on long-term recall of vocabulary and grammatical structures.
  • Improves attention by requiring selective attention to grammatical features of similar response alternatives.
  • Develops processing of images and sounds quickly enough to discriminate between their differences.
  • Develops sequencing by using word order to help determine precise meanings.

Fast ForWord Reading Level 4

Fast ForWord Reading Level 4 exercises help to improve reading skills by applying knowledge of word origins, word forms, sentence structures, and punctuation rules to increase comprehension.

To accelerate reading progress, Fast ForWord Reading Level 4 software develops critical brain processing efficiency in four key areas:
  • Builds memory by having students use working memory to compare paragraphs with single sentence paraphrases.
  • Improves attention by enhancing the ability to focus on different aspects of presented vocabulary and ignore distractions.
  • Develops processing of images and sounds quickly enough to discriminate between their differences.
  • Develops sequencing by using logical relationships, word order and syntax to identify precise meanings.

Fast ForWord Reading Level 5

Fast ForWord Reading Level 5 software is appropriate for students in upper elementary, middle and high school. It concentrates on enhancing advanced reading comprehension and expanding vocabulary skills.

To accelerate reading progress, Fast ForWord Reading Level 5 software develops critical brain processing efficiency in four key areas:
  • Builds memory by having students hold words and sentences in working memory while completing or reorganizing sentences and paragraphs.
  • Improves attention by allowing students to selectively focus on critical information while sustaining attention across longer text passages and question sets.
  • Develops processing by enhancing fluency in extracting and integrating meaning from longer text passages.
  • Develops sequencing by enabling the recognition of causal and temporal event sequences in text passages.
